چکیده

Why do we build models? There are two basic reasons: explanation or prediction (Ripley, 2004). Using large ensembles of models for prediction is commonplace, but is rarely used for explanation, where we typically choose one “best” model. When there are several equally good models, it is common sense to look at them too, but can the “bad” models tell us something as well? This paper describes exploratory model analysis for ensembles of linear models, where we look at all possible main effects models for a given dataset (or a large subset of these models). This gives greater insight than looking at any small set of best models alone: an ensemble of many models can tell us more about the underlying data than any individual model alone. This paper builds heavily on exploratory modelling analysis as introduced by Unwin et al. (2003), but rather than describing different types of useful plots it is organised around different levels of data. We will assume we have m models describing a data set with n observations and p variables. If all possible main effects models are fit, there will be 2 − 1 models in the ensemble. After fitting the models, we compute summary statistics on four levels:

A Value-Oriented Iterative Service Modeling Process

In order to help service designers build high-quality service models quickly and accurately, this paper presents a value-oriented iterative service modeling process. This modeling process combines service business perspective and service value perspective together, and it is executed interactively between service model space and service value space, simultaneously, some value-awareness activiti...

Evidence-Based Interactive Management of Change

Evidence-based interactive management of change means hands-on experience of modified work processes, given evidence of change. For this kind of pro-active organizational development support we use an organisational process memory and a communication-based representation technique for rolespecific and task-oriented process execution. Both are effective means for organizations becoming agile thr...

MASTERARBEIT Interactive Computer Generated Architecture

The creation of visually convincing architectural models using traditional modeling methods is a labor intensive task. Procedural modeling techniques strive to reduce the manual work an artist has to perform when modeling architecture. In previous work, those techniques were successfully applied to the creation of architecture. However, previous methods have a limited usability, as they are bas...

Debugging Non-determinism: a Petrinets Modelling, Analysis, and Debugging Tool

Non-deterministic formalisms are used to model systems whose runtime behaviour is inherently non-deterministic (its runtime execution might be different in consecutive runs, even for the same inputs). To analyse these systems, the full state space is explored to check whether an unwanted state (for example: deadlock, unsafe) can be reached. Debugging support for such formalisms is currently lim...

Representing 3D virtual objects: Interaction between visuo-spatial ability and type of exploration

We investigated individual differences in interactively exploring 3D virtual objects. 36 participants explored 24 simple and 24 difficult objects (composed of respectively three and five Biederman geons) actively, passively, or not at all. Both their 3D mental representation of the objects and visuo-spatial ability was assessed. Results show that, regardless of the object's complexity, people w...
